Pioneering: Forging with nozzles

Sheffield Forgemasters has put its unique nuclear capabilities on show to a global audience of key decision makers at a London conference.

Chief executive Dr Graham Honeyman told delegates to the Civil Nuclear Energy Showcase event, organised by UK Trade and Investment, that the Brightside Lane firm had invested significant time and money into pushing the boundaries of forging technology.

Successes include developing a technique for creating higher integrity nozzles on safety critical domed forgings than those made by existing methods involving machining and welding.

Forgemasters says it is the only civil nuclear engineering company that can use this technique, which is also more efficient, reducing costs, the number of weld inspections and fatigue points.

“As such forgings form the most crucial parts required within a modern nuclear power plant, the potential for this innovative forging technique is huge,” said Dr Honeyman.

The company has also been working on other elements of nuclear manufacturing, including ingot design, steel microstructures, materials development and new castings which are specific to the nuclear market.
