TWO businesses have teamed up in a deal that has saved one of them money and given the other confidence to expand.
Truck specialist Imperial Commercials has secured a contract to provide new DAF trucks to commercial laundry company Abbey Glen.
Previously, the Bentley-based firm used secondhand trucks until an approach from Martyn Shaw, Imperial’s regional sales manager, who presented a more cost-efficient plan.
With a five-year repair and maintenance service on offer, Abbey Glen initially ordered two trucks, but later increased the number to seven which will be on the road by the end of this year.
The business says it has made financial savings, increased its fuel efficiency and improved payload, while Imperial Commercials has shored up its position and hopes to add new facilities to its Carcroft premises next year. It has also just recruited a second apprentice to work and be trained in its busy garage.
For Abbey Glen, the development is part of an ongoing investment plan that has seen the business make major strides in recent years.
In 2010, it doubled the commercial capacity of its Doncaster site with an injection of £1.5 million on new buildings and equipment. Last year it invested a further £1 million in finishing equipment and added more this year.
It now employs about 130 staff, regularly recruits drivers and factory workers and welcomes job applications at all times.
David Horsefield, Abbey Glen managing director, has been keen to see changes implemented including the latest transport contract.
He said: “Despite the recession, we have been committed to invest in the company.
“We are looking for investment opportunities to improve service, productivity and quality of our products.”
