Excel parked in top spot among SME employers
Car park management services and products specialist Excel Parking Services has become the biggest employer among South Yorkhsire's top Small and Medium Sized Enterprises.
Excel takes the place of the Acredula Group, the publishing group which used to be Barnsley's second most profitable company, but has slipped out of this year's table after recording losses.
Barnsley continues to be well-represented at the top of the table, however, with the Company Shop retaining its second place and newcomer R&M Swaine – owners of the Rhythm & Booze off-licence chain – in third.
Rhythm & Booze more than doubled in size after buying 34 stores from the administrators of failed off-licence operator First Quench last December, with the assistance of BHP Corporate Finance – a development which could make it too big to retain its place in next year's Top 100 SMEs.
First Quench traded under the Threshers, Wine Rack and The Local brands and the stores acquired by Rhythm & Booze included eight stores in Sheffield, two in Rotherham and one in Bawtry.
Leisure Ventures, the Sheffield company behind the Felicini restaurant chain, is another newcomer, while Flow Group returns to the Top SMEs and Top SME Employers table, too.
Kiveton Park-based CW Fletcher, Rotherham-based Horbury Building Systems and ASD Lighting and the Chesterfield-based Accession Group all retain places among the Top Employers.
All have fallen down the table, not due to a reduction in employees but because of the arrival of bigger employers.
New arrivals among the leading employers include Abbey Glen, HLMAD, Kaye Aluminium and Blundells Property Services.
Doncaster-based laundry and linen rental group Abbey Glen was founded 110 years ago and has undertaken major refurbishment and capital investment at its linen division in Sheffield and workwear division in Worksop over the last three years.
HLMAD – better known as HLM Architects – is based in Sheffield and has seven offices around the UK, including in Glasgow, Belfast and Cardiff.
Kaye Aluminium, based in Doncaster, is one of the UK's leading independent extrusion companies producing aluminium profiles for windows, doors, electronic trunking, air conditioning, ceiling systems and signage and bespoke application in the building, electronic and automotive sectors.
The company is part of the Exlabesa Group, a privately family run business, based in Galicia, Spain.
Blundells Property Services, based in Sheffield, offers a range of property services including residential sales, lettings and auctions and recently launched an iPhone app which allows users to search for properties which it has available for sale or to let and includes a GPS search facility.
