PLANS for high speed rail through South Yorkshire have been outlined to Sheffield Council leader Julie Dore at a summit meeting with Transport Secretary Patrick McLoughlin.
Coun Dore attended the meeting in Liverpool yesterday about the HS2 network which involved the leaders of England’s eight core cities.
Mr McLoughlin, Tory MP for Derbyshire Dales, which includes Bakewell and part of the Hope Valley, said: “I welcome the support of the Core Cities group – including Sheffield – and share their desire to see HS2 delivered as quickly as possible.
“HS2 is great news for Sheffield as it will significantly cut journey times from South Yorkshire to London, Birmingham and the East Midlands.
“We have been working closely with Sheffield so that HS2 generates even more opportunities for people and businesses in this great city and South Yorkshire.”
Details of the proposed route are set to be made public, but are understood to include a station in the Meadowhall area rather than Sheffield city centre.
The Department for Transport said the high speed lines north of Birmingham are due to open in 2032/33.
