Doctorate for metal research

THE LORD Mayor of Sheffield’s husband has received a doctorate in recognition of his wealth of scientific work.

Steel firm boss John Dunkley, Coun Sylvia Dunkley’s consort, has received a PhD under special regulations from Cambridge University, where he was once a student.

He has been recognised for his studies of metal powders and atomisation over the last four decades. He has written around 60 papers on the subject.

Dr Dunkley runs Atomising Systems Limited, in Vulcan Road, near Meadowhall, which currently employs more than 20 people.

The firm is shipping plant and metal powders to many countries around the world.

His PhD award comes a few years after he was also honoured by election as a Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering, the engineering equivalent of the scientists’ Royal Society.

Dr Dunkley, whose wife also holds a PhD, said: “It is most gratifying to seem my life’s work recognised by my old university and my peers.

“I have been receiving messages addressed to Dr Dunkley for years, so it will be pleasant not to have to tell correspondants that I am really a Mr!”

In his spare time, Dr Dunkley sings with the Sterndale Singers.

He also enjoys playing jazz and he helps organise the annual Music in the Gardens event which is staged at the Botanical Gardens.
