Czech-ing out opportunities

SIX Sheffield companies are back from a whirlwind visit to the Czech Republic where UK Trade and Investment has been helping them explore overseas business opportunities.

A4E, Webb Worlds, Panache Lingerie, Britannia School of Business, Universal Alloys and Metals and Newsome Tools were among 18 companies from Yorkshire attending UKTI's International Business Network event in Prague.

After a briefing from senior members of UKTI's trade team based in Prague and CzechInvest, the Czech Republic's agency for business development and investment, the Yorkshire delegation met Czech firms at the networking event where the Czech Deputy Minister of Industry and Trade, Milan Hovorka, spoke alongside UK Business Ambassador Lord Digby Jones.

The Yorkshire companies spent the afternoon in one-to-one meetings with Czech firms in a bid to seek areas of future collaboration and partnership.

Martin Newsome, managing director of Newsome Tools, said: "We have never done any business in the Czech Republic and this seemed like an ideal opportunity to find out more about our prospects while taking advantage of the support and expertise that was offered by the UKTI teams.

"My meetings there have been very productive, including contacts with a wholesaler who wants us to supply our brand of automotive tools."

Panache Lingerie, meanwhile, says it is now following up on discussions it had with Czech companies and is confident that at least one company will be placing orders.

UKTI regional director, Mark Robson, said: "Finding Czech partner firms for the 18 Yorkshire companies who represented everything from food services to engineering, and getting them together in the space of one day has been something of a military operation. All the companies have come back to Yorkshire with some good prospects for future business."

Trade between Britain and the Czech Republic is currently worth around 5 billion and UKTI helped 560 UK companies to do business in the Czech Republic last year.
