Council wants to lead regeneration
SHEFFIELD City Council is calling for the Government to give Sheffield more power to guide its own regeneration.
Cabinet Member for Economy and Enterprise Sylvia Anginotti said: "We want to see a stronger role for local authorities when it comes to economic development with a clearer and simplified reporting structure.
"We want to get rid of the bureaucracy and ensure that working locally, in the city region, regionally and nationally can be coordinated and interlinked."
Coun Anginotti made her remarks as the Council responded to a government consultation document on the future control of local economic development and regeneration. She said: "The proposed reforms give us a real chance to shape our own policies in line with what is happening locally.
"We want to boost the local economy, improve job opportunities for all and give everyone more cash in their pocket. Rather than having a one size fits all approach across the country, we will be able to tailor solutions to what is right for Sheffield."
Sheffield City Council wants genuine delegation of decision-making powers and resources from central or regional government to the most appropriate level, ideally a single local authority or a group of local authorities working together.
