Convention highlights region's expertise

South Yorkshire is showcasing its advanced manufacturing credentials at the Manufacturing Advisory Service's forthcoming Yorkshire & Humber Manufacturing Convention.

The convention, which takes place in Harrogate next week, aims to help manufacturers prepare their businesses for the future.

Among the South Yorkshire developments on show at the convention will be MANTRA, the MANufacturing TRAnsporter created by the South Yorkshire-based Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre, which demonstrates the advanced manufacturing technologies developed by the centre, which was established by aerospace giant Boeing and Sheffield University.

MANTRA incorporates advanced CAD/CAM stations, a four axis machining centre, range of novel cutting tools and associated analytical as well as an advanced assembly demonstrator incorporating indoor GPS, laser alignment and smart tooling.

Joe Anwyl, senior business development manager with South Yorkshire's Advanced Manufacturing and Metals team, said: "The South Yorkshire region has been renowned for engineering excellence for over 200 years, and remains home to world-leading companies such as; Corus, AESSEAL, Dormer Tools, Gripple, Sheffield Forgemasters, Kostal, Koyo Bearings, Marshall Aerospace, and Peglers.

"The area also boasts an unrivalled range of research and development expertise. Both Sheffield universities have excellent research credentials in engineering and materials, plus there are the research organisations at the Advanced Manufacturing Park, and NAMTEC, the National Metals Technology Centre."

"The MAS Convention is the ideal opportunity to highlight how South Yorkshire is leading the way globally in many aspects of advanced manufacturing and materials technology, and how in many cases the future of manufacturing is already here in our region."
