WORK will soon begin on more than 100 new homes on the site of a historic former Sheffield industrial works.

A total of 107 new houses of between one and four bedrooms are to be built in a £26million scheme at the old Green Lane Works site, Kelham Island, by award-winning eco developer Citu.

The Grade II* listed entrance archway from the old works will be incorporated in the development, along with four other former industrial buildings which will be converted into commercial and leisure spaces.

Citu, based in Leeds, plans to open a marketing suite at the site next month.

Aisling Ramshaw, sales and marketing manager, said: “We want Little Kelham to be a great place to live. The mix of housing available will attract first time buyers as well as families.

“We intend to mix the old by refurbishing the existing buildings preserving part of Sheffield’s great heritage, and introduce the new by building sustainable and eco friendly homes that respond to the growing demand of responsible house purchasers.

“Our plans for commercial and leisure options will ensure this will be a vibrant area in itself.

“Citu intends to become part of this community and it is exciting to be at the start of, what we intend, to be a pioneering building project.”

Citu has previously won a series of honours including Leeds Architecture Awards 2012, Energy Saving Trust Micro Generation Awards 2011 Development of the Year and Estate Gazette – 2009 Green Awards – Best Development.

Also included in the plans is construction of a five-storey building for use as an energy centre with office space above.

Two new public open spaces are to be created at the site, which has been derelict since 2009.
