Companies join innovation contest

SEVEN South Yorkshire companies, including four university spin outs, will be among those bidding for thousands of pounds worth of investment at Venturefest, Yorkshire's premier science and technology showcase.

Spin outs appearing in Venturefest's University Showcase include Highball Climbing, Sheffield Therapy for Aphasia Rehabilitation, Dig the Web and a new development for preventing and treating infection of the hospital super bug MRSA.

Companies in the Innovation Showcase at the show and awards ceremony, which takes place today, include Mr Shox and Selfix Technology from Sheffield and Aardvark Display Lighting from Rotherham.

Highball Climbing, founded by Sheffield Hallam University sports science graduate Andrew Asquith and architectural technology student Oliver Hemstock, won the University's 2009 Enterprise Challenge.

The company specialises in developing products climbers can use for training and providing performance coaching and will be demonstrating its freestanding training wall and unveiling a new training aid.

Sheffield Therapy for Aphasia Rehabilitation (STAR) has been developed at Sheffield University and allows people who have suffered a stroke to regain language and communication skills through intensive computer-based therapy.

Another Sheffield University-based business, Dig the Web, provides a range of internet-based services for businesses.

Meanwhile, researchers are seeking backing for their work on developing specific monoclonal antibodies to prevent and treat MRSA and related infections.

Mr Shox will be seeking funding for a revolutionary design of electronically controlled shock absorber for mountain bikes.

Selfix Technology is the creator of a non-toxic, biodegradable super-strength polymer adhesive which comes in the form of thin plastic sheets that can be cut into any shape and written upon and will stick to materials like paper and wood.

Aardvark Display Lighting will also be taking part at Venturefest, which is taking place in York.
