Closure of account helps to keep South Yorkshire barges afloat

Members of the Swinton Bridge Action Group handed over a cheque for 2,000 to the Swinton Lock Activity Centre.

Members of the Swinton Bridge Action Group handed over a cheque for 2,000 to the Swinton Lock Activity Centre.

MEMBERS of a South Yorkshire action group have closed their bank account – and donated the funds to a community activity centre.

The Swinton Bridge Action Group has handed over £2,000 to the Swinton Lock Activity Centre.

Giles Brearley, group chairman, said: “It was formed to involve those with an interest in the Swinton Bridge area to work for improvements.

“It raised funds, carried out clean-ups, built a rockery and acted as a pressure group to seek improvements to the canal spur.

“Following much hard work from the group the waterway authority has taken on responsibility for previously neglected areas.

“This now releases the use of holding on to reserves for funding future actions.”

The donation will support SLAC’s two barges.
