Can do approach teaches children to read

E-learning specialist Can Studios is working with Oxford University Press to develop free software for schools that will improve reading standards.

The software tool has been developed by Sheffield-based Can in response to a Government plan to help teachers to identify children in need of extra support by introducing a new phonics-based screening check for six-year-olds.

Managing director Paul Hilton said: “We are delighted to be developing this phonics package with Oxford University Press, who chose to work with us because of our vast experience in developing e-learning packages, particularly around the teaching of phonics.

“Our tool will allow primary school teachers across the country to prepare for new screening checks supported by a leading name in educational resources.”

Can Studios, which is based at The Workstation, in the heart of Sheffield’s creative and digital quarter, has previously developed phonics packages for Collins Education, a division of publishers HarperCollins.

Its new tool will support a Department for Education pledge to provide high-quality phonics resources for teachers and their pupils, made after England slipped down the international table for reading in primary schools. Currently, 15 per cent of pupils fail to reach the standard expected at Key Stage 1 and 16 per cent are below the standard expected at Key Stage 2.

Can Studios’ tool is due to be launched by The Oxford University Press in November and is designed to help teachers to review their classes’ progress and tailor teaching packages accordingly.

n Can Studios was set up more than 10 years ago and develops bespoke learning materials and applications for government agencies, corporate and educational clients.
