SHEFFIELD Renewables is launching a bid to raise a quarter of a million pounds from local people to help fund a hydro power scheme at Meadowhall in Sheffield.

The community and a social enterprise, which develops, funds and operates renewable energy schemes, says fund raising will start now that planning permission has been granted for the Jordan Dam hydro power scheme.

Sheffield Renewables says the location is one of the best water power resources in Sheffield, but, uncertainty over planning permission had been a significant barrier to the project’s development.

The scheme is designed to generate around 310,000kWh of electricity a year – enough to power about 80 homes and save around 150 tonnes of carbon dioxide from being discharged into the atmosphere.

Water flowing over the dam will be diverted through a channel turning an Archimedes screw, linked to a generator, to produce electricity.

Managing director Rob Pilling said: “Planning permission for our hydro power scheme is a boost to our plans for community owned renewable energy in Sheffield. It is particularly encouraging that so much of the work was contributed by volunteers.”

Sheffield Renewables plans to raise £250,000 for the scheme from individuals, organisations and businesses by launching a community share offer in the autumn.

Remaining costs will be met from grants and loans and profits from the scheme will be used to support the development of more renewable energy projects in the city. For more information, visit: www.SheffieldRenewables.org.uk.
