NETWORK Rail has confirmed a huge package of investment plans which include electrifying the Midland Main Line and upgrading tracks between Sheffield and Manchester.
The company has published its £37.5 billion investment plans for the next five years.
Electrification of the Midland Main Line will mean faster and smoother trains between Sheffield and London, while more services are promised between Sheffield and Manchester.
Also to be funded are the trian of tram trains between Sheffield and Rotherham and work to remove bottlenecks on the East Coast Main Line from London to Edinburgh, through Doncaster.
But the company said that fares are set to continue rising to pay for the improvements and further reduce public subsidy.
