Protesters campaigning against travel pass cuts travelled en masse without paying from Barnsley railway station in a fifth ‘freedom ride’.
Barnsley Retirees Action Group spokesman Tony Nuttall said: “We can win this campaign. We urge all older and disabled people to get on board. Support from younger people, trade unions and other groups is welcome.”
A spokesman for Northern Rail said: “We respect the right to a peaceful protest and can understand disappointment about the withdrawal of the concessionary travel previously funded by SYPTE.
“However, travelling on a train without paying for your journey is against the law. We don’t want to see anyone get into trouble so are urging all passengers to ensure they are carrying a valid ticket.”
