Budget plans could see 600 jobs axed at council

HUNDREDS of council jobs will be cut in Derbyshire if budget plans are approved next week.

The county council is proposing to slash £25 million in the coming financial year, on top of savings totalling £45 million and 800 job losses in the past two years.

Another 600 jobs are predicted to go.

Freezing council tax for the second year is also included in the budget to be decided on Wednesday at 2pm.

Authority leader Coun Andrew Lewer said the measures were down to national cuts.

He said: “We are doing what we can to be as efficient as possible and make the very best use of our council taxpayers’ money.

“We understand many people are struggling to pay their bills so for the second year running we are recommending we freeze our share of the council tax bill. Council tax has not been frozen for two years running in Derbyshire before.

“We are determined to protect frontline services as much as possible.

“Our budget plans still mean we are able to spend £116 million over the next few years which will improve our roads, schools and provide new centres for older people.”

The council says administration costs are to be cut by a third more than frontline services.

How come Derbyshire can manage to improve roads within an existing budget whilst the clowns in Sheffield have to rely on a PFI?
