FASTER broadband could be brought to rural areas on the edge of Sheffield to help businesses and residents.
Sheffield Council’s ruling Labour group has agreed to instruct officers to report on how improvements can be made.
Coun Alison Brelsford, Liberal Democrat member for Stocksbridge and Upper Don, which includes a number of rural areas, proposed a motion demanding action at a full council meeting.
She said: “Many communities I represent are being held back by the lack of broadband.
“Families are suffering and businesses are wary to invest.
“Improvements are needed now and I’ll keep campaigning to ensure is action is taken.”
Lib Dem Coun Katie Condliffe, who also represents a number of rural areas within Stannington ward, said: “Already we’ve made progress by getting the council to agree to a report. However, clearly the campaign doesn’t end here – we need to ensure the council delivers on its word.”
Coun Leigh Bramall, Labour cabinet member for business, skills and development, said: “We want to see broadband delivered across our city, including rural areas, but it is fair to say we are not being helped by this government.”
