CONSUMERS across South Yorkshire face an inflation-busting rise in their water bills.

Ofwat today announced price rises for Britain’s water companies for the coming year.

Yorkshire Water’s average combined annual bill for water and sewerage for 2012-13 is to rise by £21, from £340 to £361, an increase of 6.1 per cent, against an inflation rate of 5.2 per cent.

Severn Trent’s average annual bill is to rise £15, from £310 to £325, an increase of 4.8 per cent.

Regina Finn, Ofwat chief executive officer, said: “When we set limits on prices, we listened to customers. They told us they wanted bills kept down, while maintaining safe, reliable water supplies. We challenged companies hard to deliver this. Our decision meant that, before inflation, average bills would remain broadly stable between 2010-15.

“We understand any bill rise is unwelcome, particularly in tough economic times. Inflation feeds through into water bills, and this is driving these rises.”
