Blade-production 'newcomer' is a cut above the rest
A 200 year old Sheffield company has been named 'Best Newcomer' in the Yorkshire Productivity Awards.
Attercliffe-based Microblade makes circular cutting blades for the sanitary paper industry and won the award for the steps it has taken to improve its efficiency and competitiveness in the current recession.
Microblade employs around 50 people and initially put ten of them through a workplace organisation training course as part of a continuous improvement programme.
Since then it has launched a wider development programme including training in language and general computer skills.
General manager Tony Egley said: "I entered the team for the award in recognition of the way the workforce had taken to the training programme. I am delighted with their success.
"This award has already had a positive effect on the company's productivity by empowering the workforce to come up with, and implement, their own new ideas. It has also had a great impact on the performance of the Microblade team as a whole and everybody involved should take great pride in what they have achieved."
Steve Wainwright, investor development manager at city development company Creativesheffield hailed Microblade as a great example of a company that is determined to continue investing in its people."
