Bid to be Europe's e-learning capital

SHEFFIELD is setting its sights on becoming Europe's 'E-learning Capital.'

The city already lays claim to being the UK's largest e-learning community and is home to a number of leading edge developers of online education and training materials and systems.

Recently, it gained the added distinction of housing what is claimed to be the world's largest and most sophisticated library of e-learning materials.

Now, city development company Creative Sheffield is hoping to attract investment from e-learning companies from the USA, India and China.

Creative Sheffield chief executive Ian Bromley said: "Several cities are vying to grab this sector for their own but Sheffield already employs more people in e-learning than other cities.

"We have a head start, with organisations such as Learning Light, the non-profit centre of excellence for the use of learning technologies within the workplace, and the steady growth of indigenous companies, as well as those arriving here from elsewhere.

"Having the world's largest depository of post-vocational education training material in the city should benefit many companies, as international customers in sectors ranging from horticulture and construction to physics and catering will need design and delivery services.

"Our talent pool means Sheffield is home to the largest concentration of e-learning companies in the UK and we aim to be Number One in Europe by developing the breadth and depth of skills held here."

Brighton-based Kineo has opened an office in Sheffield and other leading e-learning organisations with major bases or headquarters in the city include Can Studios, Tribal, Line Communications, Desq, The Workshop, the Ufi and Peakdean.

Meanwhile, Sheffield's new Digital Campus, currently being developed between Sheffield Hallam University and the Midland Station, is being promoted as a an ideal location for more e-learning businesses.
