Awards for manufacturers at ceremony

TWO surgical instrument manufacturers from Chapeltown have been honoured at a prestigious awards ceremony in the Middle East.

Bolton Surgical was presented with the Middle East Hospital Health Innovation Award at the Arab Health congress in Dubai, while Steve Spurgin from Downs Surgical won the congress's International Award for Outstanding Middle East Export Achievement.

Bolton, which was founded by William Henry Bolton in the centre of Sheffield in the early 1900s and is still run by the Bolton family.

The company won the Innovation Award for its exclusive range of instruments for colo-rectal surgery, designed and manufactured in Sheffield.

Company chairman Peter Bolton received the award from Lord Darzi, the Iraqi-born Professor of Surgery Oncology, Reproductive Biology and Anaesthetics at Imperial College London and former Health Minister.

Downs Surgical can trace its history back to 1879. Two years ago the company was named the fastest growing company in the Middle East by Arab Health World magazine after it trebled sales to Libya just one year after entering the market and boosted sales to the Gulf States by 75 per cent.

The award winning Mr Spurgin is the company's international business manager.
