A serial arsonist endangered the lives of almost 20 Doncaster people and caused massive damage when eight vehicles were set ablaze in less than three hours.
The first attack was in Highfields at around 2am yesterday but the worst incidents were on a housing estate in Scawthorpe.
The fires affected six households within two-and-a-half hours and the cost to insurers could be between £70,000 and £100,000.
Cars, including included a £25,000 Volkswagen Scirocco were set alight, and in one incident flames spread to a garage destroying sofas.
Stewart Layhe, of South Yorkshrie fire service, said: “I don’t think these people have been targeted. It’s a random opportunist, someone who has made his way along the road.”
A six-year-old child was taken to hospital for smoke inhalation after the attacks.
