Argos stores under threat

CATALOGUE store chain Argos has announced it plans to axe 75 stores around the country, meaning uncertainty for the company’s 11 stores in South Yorkshire.

Bosses have not yet decided which branches are to close.

The company has stores at Angel Street in Sheffield city centre, Meadowhall, Kilner Way Retail Park at Wadsley Bridge, and Crystal Peaks, and Howard Street and Parkgate in Rotherham.

In Barnsley there are Argos shops on Peel Street, Peel Retail Park, and Cortonwood Retail Park, and in Doncaster in the Frenchgate and Wheatley Hall centres.

There are branches at Vicar Lane, Chesterfield, and Bridge Place, Worksop.

Argos has said it will ‘close or relocate’ 75 stores in the UK over the next five years as leases come to an end.

Parent company Home Retail Group, said it has reviewed Argos’s 739 stores for factors including profitability and location. The announcement follows a 37 per cent fall in group pre-tax profit to £18m in the six months to September.
