New faces taken on by city firms
Two Sheffield firms that have never taken on apprentices before have been persuaded to do so thanks to Sheffield City Council’s Sheffield 100 apprenticeship programme, designed to help youngsters who were out of work and previously not in education or training.
DP Doors & Shutters, which started out with just two employees, now operates from a factory on the Dore House Industrial Estate and employs 29 people supplying, installing and maintaining a wide range of industrial doors shutters and grilles across the UK.
It decided employing an apprentice would benefit the organisation, help with workforce planning and drive the company forward over the next 10 years and more.
Declan Purrier joined the company as an apprentice engineer and is currently working towards an NVQ in Engineering Operations at Sheffield College.
Declan said: “I am enjoying my new job and finding it rewarding. I am learning lots of new skills.”
The other company taking the plunge is Moorville Residential, which opened less than a year ago and provides a supported living environment for people with autism, Asperger’s syndrome and learning disabilities.
The firm believed investing in young people would improve their service to clients and support their workforce planning.
It took on Tom Gibson and he was joined by a second apprentice during National Apprenticeship Week.
