Apprentice’s ticket to the top
Riding high: Matthew Shipley.
TOP young apprentice Matthew Shipley is on the right route to the top – after landing a full-time job with the Stagecoach bus company in Sheffield.
The 21-year-old’s efforts were rewarded after he was named as a runner-up in the company’s apprentice of the year awards.
Matthew carried out his spell as a mechanic at the company’s Barnsley depot and was praised for his rapid progress and development.
Now Matthew, who lives in the town, will be moving to take up a post at the Ecclesfield depot after a three-year stint learning the ropes.
The awards were held as part of events happening all over the country to mark National Apprenticeship Week.
Also successful was Rotherham’s Sam Needham, aged 20, from the Rawmarsh depot, who won the Outward Bound Centre best apprentice award.
Sam is in the second year of his body technician apprenticeship.
Stagecoach’s four-year programme offers apprenticeships in mechanical, body repair or electrical engineering. The scheme involves a combination of residential learning and on the bob training at a local depot.
Engineering director Joe Gilchrist said: “Engineers are the people who maintain our fleet of buses which underlines just how important the role is.
“Stagecoach Yorkshire’s apprentices demonstrate our commitment to investing in the skilled labour force of the future. The scheme offers the young people involved the opportunity to learn practical skills first hand.”
