Airport owners debate site sale with campaign

SMALL business leaders and campaigners hoping to reopen Sheffield City Airport say they have held discussions with the site’s owners.

The Federation of Small Businesses and mystery backers are calling for redevelopment of the site to be put on hold and a public inquiry organised to assess whether the terminal could be viable if reopened.

The site is part of Sheffield Business Park, a joint venture involving Peel, which took over the old City Airport in 2002 and own Robin Hood Airport, in Doncaster.

Neville Martin, spokesman for the FSB, said: “We have held a dialogue with Sheffield Business Park who have advised us of the procedure for making a bid for the site.

“We will now be speaking to the interested parties and hope to have some progress.”

The FSB has organised a public meeting from 3.30pm on Friday, January 11, at Aston Hotel, Britannia Way, Catcliffe, to discuss the airport’s future.
