pupils from one of Doncaster’s top schools were given the honour of opening the town’s new Civic Office.
Mayor Peter Davies invited children and staff from Edlington Hill Top Primary to cut the ribbon with him because of their recent outstanding Ofsted report. The school’s choir also performed.
The new building in Waterdale features a ‘one-stop-shop’ where residents can complete all their council business in one location, as well as an impressive new council chamber.
It is now the base for about 1,600 council staff and forms a key part of the regeneration of Waterdale as part of the town’s new £300 million Civic and Cultural Quarter.
Headteacher Beryce Nixon said: “We were absolutely thrilled to be invited to perform at such a prestigious event. It is a great honour for our talented children and a huge accolade for the school. The children were extremely excited.”
Mr Davies said: “I was delighted to have children from Hill Top Primary School in Edlington playing a key role in the opening of the new Civic Office.
“I would like to congratulate them on a string of impressive awards in the last few years.
“Just last month they were recognised as an ‘outstanding’ school in their annual Ofsted inspection report.
“To put this into context, there are 16,000 schools across the country and only 200 received this accolade.
“This is a tremendous achievement and is true evidence the school has achieved rapid and sustained improvement.
“I would also like to give Mrs Nixon a special mention as she is one of only 70 headteachers to be appointed as a National Education Leader.”
Mr Davies said the new Civic Office was a credit to the town.
It consolidates numerous council functions and departments into one modern, low-energy building and will save the authority £650,000 a year in running costs.
It is hoped it will also act as a catalyst for further regeneration for Doncaster.
