£1 billion road schemes hope for Doncaster

Three new link roads to create hundreds of jobs in Doncaster and create a ‘vibrant’ town are on a ‘wish list’ of projects aiming for Government funding over the next few years.

Doncaster Council cabinet members met yesterday to hear an outline of five major regeneration schemes they feel the town would benefit from by taking a share of the Sheffield City Region Investment Fund.

If all were to go ahead by 2020 they could be worth £1 billion to the borough’s economy.

The proposed schemes are:

* D N7 – creation of a new link road from Junction 5 of the M18 to Hatfield, improving access, which also includes a number of housing sites in Thorne and Stainforth that would support the development.

* Gateway to Sheffield City Region – a new 2km road link between the A638 and Hurst Lane/airport access road along with improvements to the A638/Hurst Lane junction and the creation of a railway station at the airport. The route would unlock development at RHADS business park and land for housing.

* West Moor Link – dualling of the A630 West Moor Link between M18 Junction 4 to A18 Thorne Road and between the A18 and A630 Wheatley Hall Road, including the removal of a rail bridge pinch point.

* Urban Centre – delivery of four key town centre regeneration projects including Waterfront East; Civic and Cultural Quarter – development of offices and demolition of the old Council House.

Development of the third side of the civic square; St Sepulchre Gate West and market improvements.

Demolition of the Council House and ancillary buildings is expected to cost £1.5 million and cash is already allocated for the work.

* North Doncaster A1-A19 Link – creation of a Carcroft link road which would open up 45 hectares of employment land and housing land for approximately 1,200 units.

All local authorities in South Yorkshire have submitted proposed projects and all five of Doncaster’s have been retained on the list of key capital schemes – more than any other authority. A decision on the amount of funding available will be made by 2015.

The proposed A1/A19 link road, expected to cost around £50 million, is not top of the funding priorities but would boost regeneration and new economic development in Doncaster’s northern communities which have high levels of deprivation.

Two possible routes from the A1(M) towards the A19 have been suggested – one from the A638 at Redhouse passing across the north side of Adwick and then to the A19 north of Toll Bar.

Alternatively, the route could be from the A635 Barnsley Road passing across the B6422 and A638 to the south of Adwick before joining the A19 north of Toll Bar.

Doncaster Mayor Ros Jones said: “Doncaster has plans for a host of capital projects, which have the potential to bring thousands of jobs and investment to the town.

“All these obviously rely on funding and the town is strategically placed to be in the hunt for this through the likes of the Sheffield City Region Investment Fund.

“With the second largest economy, large amounts of land available and huge investment potential, Doncaster is clearly a major player in the Sheffield City Region.

“The town has a great central location, international airport and excellent transport links and we want to take advantage of these virtues to create a vibrant town with jobs and opportunities.

“To do this we need to think outside the box and look at how we can be at the forefront of change. The next five years are going to be very important for the town, with some very important development projects planned.

“Through the DN7 initiative, areas such as Stainforth and Hatfield are going to benefit from significant investment, creating 3,000 new homes and 6,000 new jobs with the potential to become a mixed-use energy park with a 900MW power station at its heart. Further developments in the urban centre are planned as well to continue its significant transformation.

“We are also ensuring land for over 18,500 houses is made available in the town over the next 15 years to cater for the growing population and plug the housing shortage gap.”
