Buses must clean up or be banned
BUS operators in Barnsley could be banned from using the town's interchange, new bus stops or improved routes if they fail to comply with tough new standards.
Barnsley Council and South Yorkshire Passenger Transport Executive have launched a Statutory Quality Bus Partnership Scheme.
Operators are set standards for services, including using vehicles with low emissions to cut pollution, improved cleanliness and driver training.
In return, Barnsley Council and the PTE pledged to make changes to roads to relieve congestion and reduce delays.
Stagecoach, which runs most of the town's services, has committed to the scheme.
Operators who do not comply will be barred from the interchange and cannot use improved bus stops in the town centre, or the A61 Quality Bus Corridor, which has bus priority measures.
Coun Bill Newman, Barnsley Council cabinet spokesman for development, said: "A lot of investment has gone into improving bus facilities and this partnership will now make sure bus companies keep their side of the bargain."
Environmental campaign Care4Air supports the scheme.
