Bus strike not the right route
A BUS strike will do no-one any good.
Passengers will suffer, drivers and staff will suffer and so will the company.
Yet today First Bus workers are on the brink of industrial action over a pay claim and a holiday pay agreement, at a time when many workers across the region are facing redundancy, pay cuts and pay freezes.
Drivers say they are paid around 1 an hour less that their counterparts in Leeds and they are unhappy about night buses for staff and a holiday pay scheme that fixes rates at 2003 levels.
For unions to be pushing for strike action at a time when passenger numbers are dwindling and services are under threat shows the depth of their frustration, and there are issues that need to be resolved.
But to strike now would only cause disruption to services and the public's travelling routines and could eventually cost more jobs.
Regional inequalities should be addressed by the company and the effects of any cuts to staff services considered seriously, but no matter how just their cause there will be little sympathy or support for a bus strike for more pay when thousands are in fear of losing their jobs altogether.
Wimbledon roof is showcase for city
STREET CraneXpress has once more shown it is a world leader after it provided the expertise and experience to make a retractable roof to cover Wimbledon's Centre Court a reality.
In its time the company has tackled many challenging projects around the world, from helping to design China's longest arch bridge to coming up with a solution to the problem of window cleaning at the distinctive-shaped Gherkin building in London.
But its latest triumph is destined to put the company's name even more firmly in the international spotlight.
The Wimbledon tournament, which begins today, is the world's foremost tennis competition.
And it will make this city proud to know that it was a Sheffield firm which put an end to the cry that rain has once more stopped play.
