Burns man home to recuperate

A SHEFFIELD man seriously injured in a blaze in a Bangkok nightclub has returned home, almost two months on, to recover from his ordeal.

Oliver Smart, aged 35, of Marriot Road, Millhouses, suffered serious burns when the club where he was celebrating New Year's Eve went up in flames, killing over 60 other revellers.

He told The Star: "I'm back in England now. I had seven days in the Northern General Hospital and am staying with family while I recover. I have burns on my back and need the dressings changed daily.

"I am glad to be back and just want to move on now."

Oliver had travelled to Thailand to celebrate the new year with his girlfriend, after spending Christmas with his mum and stepfather Pauline and Mike Gent at their home in Goa, India, when tragedy struck.

An indoor firework display triggered the blaze which turned the club into an inferno, trapping scores of people inside.

Oliver was treated in intensive care at a Thai hospital before finally being flown back home. While he was in Bangkok his stepfather, who used to run The Millhouses Hotel with his wife Pauline, died after suffering a heart attack.
