FIREFIGHTERS from South Yorkshire will be travelling to London on Saturday to take part in a mass rally organised to protest at the coalition Government’s plans for reforming the public sector.
Members of the Fire Brigades Union will board coaches in Rotherham, Barnsley and Doncaster to head to the rally and march organised by the TUC to demonstrate against public sector cuts.
FBU regional secretary Pete Smith said: “These detrimental cuts are being made when the numbers of fire fatalities are unfortunately rising.
“As an emergency frontline service there is no room to allow for shortcuts – we are dealing with people’s lives on a daily basis.
“It is immoral to play Russian roulette with the lives of the public and firefighters.
“The taxpayers expect value for money and they most definitely expect a fire appliance, within a few minutes, should they ever be in the position of needing one. With the savage cuts being made this will not always be the case.”
