A youngster is one step closer to her dream of becoming the next Jess Ennis after a string of sporting successes.
Melissa Coxon, from Anston, Rotherham, won the 200m sprint at the recent Festival of Athletics at Don Valley.
This year she has also come first and third at competitions in Leeds and Hull.
At the age of 10, the girl was the youngest competitor in her division and beat off stiff competition from 14 other budding athletes.
She counts Sheffield gold-medal winner Jess as her inspiration and trains twice a week at her home training facility – the English Institute of Sport in Attercliffe.
Melissa, who is a member of Sheffield International Venues’ Athletics Academy, said: “My dream is to one day train with Jessica Ennis.
“After I watched her compete in the Olympics last year I was inspired to work hard at my athletics and it’s great when I get to see her train on the same track that I do at the EIS.
“I’m really happy with my performance at the athletics competitions this year.
“I’ve only just started competing properly so hopefully with some more training I can keep winning.”
