A LANDSCAPE gardener from Doncaster has been honoured at a Royal reception after making the line up for a national competition.

Simon Abbott, aged 22, from Harpenden Drive, Dunscroft, Doncaster, attended the event, hosted by The Duke of York, to celebrate his inclusion in Team UK for WorldSkills London 2011.

Simon, who is a self-employed landscape gardener, was chosen to represent the UK in the landscape gardening category at the event after taking part in a four day selection competition in June in which he beat off competition from all over the UK.

He also met other Royals, including the Duchess of Cornwall, at the event.

WorldSkills London 2011 takes place in October and will be the world’s largest international skills competition with young people from across the globe competing.

There will be 1,000 competitors from over 50 countries competing in 46 skill areas over four days.

Simon said: “It is a huge honour to have been selected to represent the UK at WorldSkills London 2011 and attend a reception at Buckingham Palace.

He added: “I hope this opportunity will allow me to showcase how vocational training can lead to successful employment and career opportunities.

“I know the next few months will be tough as I will be in training for the event and I really hope the whole of the country gets behind Team UK.”
