Brownie camp meeting for Lib Dem leader
OKAY, you can join. But you're going to have to get a uniform.
Lib Dem leader Nick Clegg MP was made an honorary Brownie when he visited a girl guiding camp at Sheffield Outdoor Activity Centre in Whiteley Woods near Bents Green.
The MP for Sheffield Hallam enjoyed a tour of the centre, chatted to young Brownies and Guides, and saw the dorms where the girls sleep when the weather's too wet for camping.
Two Brownie packs – the 60th Sheffield Brownies and the 72nd Meersbrook Brownies – were staying over at the centre, taking part in activities to earn more badges to stitch onto their sleeves.
The girls had an arts themed schedule to follow, including crafts and circus skills.
Mr Clegg's visit was part of Girlguiding UK's 12 Hour Challenge, which aims to encourage people to volunteer for Girlguiding UK, the largest voluntary organisation for girls and young women.
Nationally, a quarter of eight-year-old girls is a Brownie and almost half of all the women in the UK have been involved in guiding at some stage in their lives.
Jenna Oxley, from Girlguiding UK, said: "We run Rainbows, Brownies, Guides and a Senior Section, enabling girls and young women to develop their potential whatever their ability or background.
"We are striving to offer new opportunities, seek to give girls a voice, and provide a unique, girl-only space where members feel comfortable just being themselves.
"Our members enjoy a spectrum of activities from outdoor adventure to pop-concerts to community action."
