Britain's Got Talent's Amanda Holden backs charity collection service

BRITAIN'S Got Talent judge Amanda Holden is backing a new collection service which aims to raise thousands of pounds for Sheffield Children's Hospital and tackle world poverty.

The fundraising arm of Sheffield Children's Hospital has joined forces with Oxfam to launch a groundbreaking house-to-house charity bag collection scheme.

The Children's Hospital Charity, along with three other UK children's hospital charities, has signed up to be part of the new scheme which will collect clothes, books, music and homewares from people's houses.

The scheme will collect in areas close to the hospitals, with the revenue raised from local supporters going directly to help their local children's hospital.

Every bag of donated items from the South Yorkshire region will help Sheffield Children's Hospital provide vital research and equipment to help treat young patients, as well as supporting Oxfam's work with people living in poverty around the world.

Backing the scheme Amanda Holden said: "Oxfam's house-to-house collection scheme is one I support and really is the first of its kind to benefit charities 100 per cent. It keeps the money raised in the charity sector, meaning however small or large your donation you can be sure every last penny will go to a great cause."

David Vernon-Edwards, director of Sheffield Children's Hospital Charity, said: "We are all excited to be working on this innovative partnership with Oxfam.

"Here in Sheffield just one bag of goods will go a long way to providing vital equipment and research for our young patients."

Collection bags will be sent out to homes in areas connected to the hospitals four times a year, for supporters to fill and Oxfam to collect and sort. Goods will then be sold to generate maximum value.

Sheffield Children's Hospital will receive 75 a tonne, and the first collection bags will be delivered to houses in the S11, S10, S8 and S6 postcodes of Sheffield throughout June. The long-term goal is to expand the catchment areas.
