The A628 Woodhead Pass has been closed this afternoon after strong winds caused by Storm Jonas wreaked havoc.

The trans-Pennine route was closed after a number of high-sided vehicles were blown over by the stormy winds.

In one 400 metre stretch of road three trucks were blown onto their sides.

Motorists are being asked to take alternative routes, and the closure could effect the journey of hundreds of Sheffield United fans attending tonight's away fixture at Blackpool.

Storm Jonas caused chaos across large swathes of the eastern United States at the weekend bringing record-breaking snowfall to some parts.

The weather system is now sweeping across the UK bringing strong winds and torrential rain.

Weather warnings have been put in place for western parts of the British Isles and there are several flood warnings in place.
