a SOLDIER from South Yorkshire has been killed while serving in Afghanistan.

Private Matthew Thornton, aged 28, from Barnsley, was a Territorial Army soldier with 4th Battalion The Yorkshire Regiment.

He died in an explosion while on patrol in the Babaji area of North-Eastern Afghanistan.

Private Thornton, a former pupil at Darton High School, flew out to the war-torn country last month.

His family described him as a ‘dedicated soldier’ who was ‘passionate about his job’.
