DETECTIVES have made an arrest in connection with an attack which left a 35-year-old man in a critical condition in hospital.

Officers are quizzing a 21-year-old man on suspicion of attempted murder in connection with the assault, which happened just minutes into the New Year.

Iain Eldridge was with his girlfriend outside a Doncaster area hairdresser’s shop in Station Road, Bawtry, near to The Penny Farthing pub, just after midnight on Sunday when he was approached by an unknown man and assaulted in what appears to be an unprovoked attack.

Mr Eldridge was taken to Doncaster Royal Infirmary with a severe head injury, but later transferred to Sheffield’s Royal Hallamshire Hospital where he remains in a critical condition.

The arrested man is currently in police custody assisting officers with their inquiries.
