A TEENAGE girl escaped an attempted late-night abduction in a Sheffield suburb, police have said.

The 14-year-old girl told officers she was walking along Birley Spa Lane, near the Golden Plover pub in Hackenthorpe, when a man tried to drag her into a car.

The teenager struggled free and escaped the man’s grasp, and fled as the car tried to follow her.

Police are appealing for witnesses to the incident, which took place at around 10.10pm on Saturday night.

Officers are trying to locate a maroon-coloured saloon.

A police spokesman said: “South Yorkshire Police are appealing for information after an alleged attempted abduction that took place close to the Birley area of Sheffield.

“The suspect is described as an Asian man between 48 and 50 years old, 5ft 6ins tall, medium build, with bushy black eyebrows and gelled black hair.

“The man was clean-shaven, wearing a black T-shirt with navy blue writing on it and dark denim jeans.”

Police said the ‘old-style’ car pulled up on the wrong side of the road before the man grabbed the girl by the arm and tried to pull her into the vehicle.

The spokesman added: “South Yorkshire Police are appealing for anyone who was in the area at the time, or who may have seen something suspicious to call 101.

“If you are deaf or hard of hearing call text phone 18001 101 or SMS 07786 220 022 and quote incident number 1297 of May 12, 2012.”
