Breaking: Sheffield man arrested by stab murder cops
DETECTIVES hunting the killer of man who was stabbed to death on a city street have arrested a man from the Sheffield Lane Top area.
It follows the death of a 29-year-old man who was attacked in the early hours of yesterday.
The victim, believed to be a father-of-two, was found injured in Swanbourne Road, Sheffield Lane Top, at 4am.
Police said he had suffered multiple stab wounds.
He was taken to Sheffield Northern General Hospital, where he later died.
Detectives believe he was attacked in or around Swanbourne Road and are appealing for witnesses or anyone with information to come forward.
The victim has not yet been named by police but local people say he was a dad of two children.
One witness told The Star he had heard a car hurtling at high speed down the road and into a speed bump at around the time of the killing.
Sheffield MP David Blunkett, whose Brightside and Hillsborough constituency covers Sheffield Lane Top, was dismayed to hear of the murder.
"My Aunt Mary used to live on Swanbourne Road and I have always thought of it as an extremely law abiding and crime-free area," he told The Star.
"It is critical the police are able to provide reassurance to local people and that there is full co-operation by anyone who can give any lead whatsoever.
"Once again it underlines the importance of clamping down on all dangerous weapons - knives and not just guns.
"All, including families, have a part to play in this.
"Quite often family members know someone is carrying a weapon but do nothing about it."
Sheffield city councillor Peter Price, a former Lord Mayor, lives on Swanbourne Road. He told The Star: "I am stunned and horrified something like this should happen here.
"It's not a street where you would expect this.
"I have never experienced any trouble here of any kind."
A nearby alleyway, which links Swanbourne Road to the bus terminus on Barnsley Road, was sealed off while police scenes of crime experts carried out a search of the area.
Forensics team, in white suits, were joined by officers who searched gardens.
Sniffer dogs were brought in, and the South Yorkshire Police helicopter was scrambled to observe the crime scene and surrounding streets from the sky.
Swanbourne Road remained cordoned off for most of yesterday, with police officers guarding the street at both ends to preserve the crime scene.
Detectives believe the victim, who was discovered at 4am yesterday, had been attacked "in or around" Swanbourne Road in the early hours.
Anyone with information should call South Yorkshire Police on 0114 220 2020 and ask for extension 4666, or call Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
