A MAN accused of storing explosive chemicals, causing residents in Sheffield to be evacuated from their homes, has appeared in court.

James Curtis, aged 34, of Ridgehill Avenue, Intake, appeared at Sheffield Magistrates’ Court charged with two counts of possessing an explosive substance for an unlawful purpose.

Police have said the chemicals were consistent with those used in the production of Class A drugs.

Ridgehill Avenue was cordoned off on Thursday, and residents were forced to leave their homes for hours.

They were then evacuated again on Friday when a follow-up search uncovered more chemicals, and a controlled explosion had to be carried out.

Curtis was remanded in custody before a hearing at Sheffield Crown Court next week.
