Police have today formally identified the man found in a house in Wombwell as 65-year-old John Gogarty.
Officers were called to a property in Marsh Street at around 4pm on Friday 17 July where they discovered the body of Mr Gogarty.
A post-mortem examination took place yesterday and found that Mr Gogarty died from multiple stab wounds.
A murder investigation is underway but officers want to reassure members of the public that the incident appears to be a targeted attack.
Detective Chief Inspector Phil Etheridge, who is leading the inquiry, said: “We are in the early stages of the investigation however the indication, at this stage, is that the person who carried out the attack was probably known to the victim as there were no signs of forced entry.
“If anyone has any information they think may assist us, however apparently insignificant, please do get in touch.
“We have a dedicated team of officers working around the clock and are following a number of lines of enquiry.”
Officers will today continue to carry out detailed investigations at the scene including searches and house-to-house enquiries. An incident room has been set up and anyone with information is asked to contact 01709 443506 quoting number 792 of July 17 2015.
