A MAN is in a life-threatening condition in hospital after being involved in a crash at Stainforth, near Doncaster.

The incident happened at 10.44am yesterday, during heavy rain, say police who are investigating the incident.

The man was driving a black Ford Ka along Kirton Lane towards Thorne when the vehicle apparently veered onto the opposite side of the road and left the carriageway, around 50 metres the Stainforth side of the junction with Ellesmere Grove. The car mounted a grassed verge and came to rest in a ditch.

The driver, aged 49 and from Thorne, is currently detained in Doncaster Royal Infirmary.

Initial enquiries have revealed that he may have been taken ill at the wheel. However, officers are appealing for witnesses to the crash or to the manner in which the car was being driven just prior to it.
