FIREFIGHTERS received around 70 calls from worried residents and motorists when homes and roads began to flood overnight.

Torrential rain left drains unable to cope with the deluge of water, causing rivers of water to run into homes and roads to become submerged.

In Barnsley, firefighters pumped out 12 homes in Beeston Square, Athersley North and Whitbourne Close, Smithies.

And in Sheffield crews were called to Hillsborough, Foxhill, Wadsley and Wisewood.

Penistone Road was closed overnight while firefighters and council workers battled to pump water away in the River Don.

Leppings Lane was also closed off because of standing water and Middlewood Road was also flooded.

Hanover Way, Wadsley Lane, Langsett Road and Victor Street were also badly affected.
