MORE than 20 firefighters are tackling a huge blaze at a household waste recycling centre in South Yorkshire this morning.

A safety cordon has been put in place around the Barnsley site on Boulder Bridge Lane, Carlton, because of fears that acetylene cylinders - which are used for welding - could explode in the heat.

Firefighters were alerted to the blaze at 11.50pm and could remain at the scene for most of the day until the cylinders are thought to have cooled down enough.

Police have closed parts of Shaw Lane to traffic while firefighters deal with the incident.

Residents in Carlton were asked to keep their doors and windows closed because of the plumes of smoke billowing from the fire.

An investigation into the cause of the blaze will be launched once fire investigators can gain access to the scrap yard.
