A MOTORWAY smash left a Sheffield man with a broken back after his car veered out of control and hit the central reservation barrier before rebounding across all three lanes.

The 49-year-old, from Woodhouse, was driving a grey Renault Clio southbound along the M1 when it hit the central reservation at 10.25am on Saturday, about a mile before Junction 33 – the Parkway turn-off.

Two witnesses said they saw a cloud of smoke before the Clio moved towards the hard shoulder.

Another witness said a black Nissan people carrier-type vehicle appeared to pull in front of the Clio.
