SHEFFIELD Cathedral has served court papers to anti-capitalist protesters it is trying to evict from its forecourt.

The cathedral has begun legal action to clear Occupy Sheffield’s tents after campaigners defied a request to leave within a week peacefully. They set up outside the cathedral on November 5.

A court hearing will now take place on Thursday January 26 at Sheffield County Court.

The Dean of Sheffield, the Very Rev Peter Bradley, said: “We will continue our discussions with Occupy Sheffield.

“We still hope to find a peaceful resolution to the protest on the Cathedral forecourt before the court hearing.

“As a responsible charity, the Cathedral Chapter has no option but to seek a small portion of the expense that this unfortunate action has incurred for the cathedral.”
