Bramall Lane neighbours warn 'keep off the grass'

RESIDENTS living in the shadow of Bramall Lane stadium are protesting at moves by developers to build on a small green space near their homes.

Developers want to build on an oasis of grass and trees near Baron Street – prompting residents to stage a demonstration to try to save the land.

Most of the terraced houses in the area only have concrete yards and residents say the patch is very precious to them.

A developer submitted an application to Sheffield Council to use the land for access to the site behind and, although the application has since been withdrawn, residents fear it could be resubmitted again in the near future.

At the moment the site is owned by the council and maintained by Sheffield Homes on its behalf.

Green Party activist Rob Murphy said: "We alerted residents to the possibility the land could be sold and they have made it very clear they don't want this to happen.

"We hope Sheffield Homes, who maintain it on behalf of the council, take note and resist any pressure on them to sell it."

Green Party Coun Jillian Creasy added: "I was amazed at how many people turned out on a rainy morning.

"People feel very strongly about green spaces, which make a huge difference to their quality of life and the feel of the local area."
