The boyfriend of a part-time glamour model allegedly murdered by an obsessive cyber-stalker told a Sheffield court he ‘couldn’t understand’ why anyone would want to kill her.
Martin Vernarsky, aged 25, is accused of strangling Ildiko Dohany after she rejected his marriage proposal. He denies murder.
Jurors at Sheffield Crown Court were told Vernarsky also became jealous when she continued to see a man she met on an internet dating website.
In a statement read to the jury, a divorced company director called Gary Doggett said he started a relationship with 34-year-old Miss Dohany after meeting her online.
Mr Doggett, from Suffolk, said he visited her in Sheffield in February 2011.
He said: “I would say we became boyfriend and girlfriend.”
He said they planned on visiting Miss Dohany’s home country of Hungary together for her sister’s wedding, but that he had to cancel because of ill health.
Mr Doggett said: “She gave me the impression she was travelling alone.”
He also said he was ‘very shocked’ when he heard about his girlfriend’s death.
Mr Doggett said: “I can’t understand why anyone would want to do this to her.
“She was a happy and fun-loving girl who lived life to the full.
“Ildiko never mentioned anyone called Martin to me.”
Vernarsky later told police officers he and Miss Dohany were due to travel overseas for a wedding.
He was found by paramedics next to her body outside his home on Claywood Road, Norfolk Park.
The trial continues.
